We are aware of recent reports of the house you are enquiring about.

This has been a holy house for our family since the beginning. For more than thirty years we could not imagine it in other people's hands, so we did not sell it. Day to day, year to year, we did what we could to keep it up. Gu Cheng built many parts of the house himself, inside and outside, with his own special ideas, so it is quite like a big artwork of his. But there was damage from nature, and damage from people. Many things were stolen, even the firewood Gu Cheng had chopped for current days, and next winter. Windows, doors and walls were broken again and again. When the old roof rusted through, we replaced it to save the house from the rain.

Most visitors have treated the house with respect. They leave flowers, fruit, notes and cards, etc. Most people come quietly and leave quietly, and this has moved us.

We are selling now because we are no longer able to keep up the maintenance. We are selling a house. We are not selling Gu Cheng's or Xie Ye's names. If someone wants the house because of them, for a museum or a memorial, that is a different conversation, and it would be on different terms.

That is why the listing makes no mention of them, and why it was deliberately kept off Chinese property sites. We hoped the sale would not revive old gossip or cause the family further distress. Recent reports, and the many articles that have since repeated and translated them, have undone that care.

Neither death happened at this property. We feel we must once again correct several other points that have been repeated in the media for many years.

No weapon was ever confirmed. After the events of October 1993, police forensically tested an axe found nearby and found no evidence on it. The coroner's finding, made five months later in March 1994 and recorded on Xie Ye's death certificate, gives the cause of death as "From head injury inflicted by a person during a domestic altercation". It names neither an axe nor Gu Cheng, although by then both had already been reported around the world.

Gu Cheng died at the scene. Xie Ye died in hospital later that day.

No court or inquest ever found that Gu Cheng intended to kill Xie Ye. The coroner described what happened as a domestic altercation, and the common description of Gu Cheng having "killed his wife and then himself" is not accurate. The loss of both Xie Ye and Gu Cheng remains a deep and lasting grief for our family.

We ask that the house not be identified by its address or photographed, and that the family's privacy be respected. We will not be giving interviews. We agree that this statement may be published. If you publish it, please include the original English words. Questions about the sale should go to Ray White.
